Tip of the Week: Cut Strips Without Peaking

One method quilters use to cut long strips of fabric is to fold it in half, line the bottom of your ruler on the fold and cut along the edge of your ruler with a rotary cutter. This technique allows you to cut fabric longer than your ruler without moving the ruler.

BUT

There are times where you unfold your strip to find it peaks in the middle making it unusable as a single long strip. Argh! Sometimes it’s caused by your ruler slipping a little as you cut. Sometimes you haven’t quite lined it up exactly on the fold. There is a way to reduce the risk of cutting “eyebrows” instead of strips.

First place your long ruler on the fold and then add another ruler right up against it. The two rulers are more stable and help your long ruler from slipping. Also, having a double ruler along the fold essentially creates a wider ruler that will reveal if your long ruler placement is a little off true.

This technique works whether you’re cutting strips on the grain or on the bias.
