Tip of the week: The one thing NOT to do to your sewing machine.

Our sewing machine is the most expensive tool we use, and we all have one habit that can wreak havok on its delicate innards.

When it’s time to change threads, don’t grab the spool and pull the thread out backwards. Bad idea. Inside the mechanism that controls thread tension and uptake are some delicate pieces that are meant to pull the thread forward — not backwards. Everytime we pull thread out backwards we yank things in the direction it was not meant to go.

Instead, snip the thread near the spool and pull the loose thread out through the needle. Sure — you waste a little thread each time but that’s a lot less expensive than a major repair to your most important tool.

There’s a great article on Quilting Daily website with more good tips for practicing sewing machine health.
